"I was at The Dorchester Hotel in Mayfair for a few hours and I walked out with a thousand pounds," says Zoe on her first day as an escort. "I went straight to Harrods the very next day and treated myself to some Gucci shoes and a Louis Vuitton bag."
That’s a £1,000 for three hours' work. Easy to see why escorting can be viewed at as a glamourous lifestyle. But we decided to drill deep into this profession and learn how things can get very strange really quickly.
33-year-old Zoe began working as an escort when she was 23. Having previously worked as a personal trainer, she tried lap-dancing, however, discovered it wasn't for her: “It’s pointless standing in high heels and getting blisters."
The first question was how exactly she ended up turning to prostitution. It's not exactly the type of job you see on a careers website, after all... "I bumped into a man I used to know while on a night out, and he gave me his card. I later realised it was for an escort agency, so I gave them a call."
From day one, Zoe says she absolutely loved it. "It gave me a complete buzz. I went for lavish dinners and then to theatre plays. I was taken on beautiful holidays. I thought, 'I love this, I want to do it forever.'"
It wasn't all glamorous, she laughs: "I have met the weird funky-smelling fat guy with terrible BO or awful breath. They weren't horrible people when I met them, they were actually very nice, they just simply did not have my degree of personal hygiene!"
Zoe's strangest experience was during a holiday to the Canary Islands. "We got back from a night out and the guy asks me to put on a lacy see-through stocking, which was crotchless, and a pair of excessive heels. So, I went in to the bathroom to freshen up and get changed.
"I walked out to discover him lying on the bed in the exact same see-through crotchless body stocking, pink lipstick and excessive heels. It was like we were twin sisters! It was so hilarious that I had to walk into the loo laughing. I made my excuses and told him that I had an upset stomach."
So, what is it like attempting to maintain down a 'real' love existence when you are jetting off with a different guy everyday? "The first time I got a boyfriend, I did not inform him and I regretted it. He referred to as me 'disgusting' and threatened to inform my family."
Since then, Zoe has told her partners that she was a lap-dancer and that "they've been fine with it." She adds: "But it is possibly because I've been, not giving them money, however they've lived in a very nice house with me and I've offered the food and the shopping."
While Zoe's family were supportive of her choice, she says the hardest time in her career was when a friend decided to follow her into the business. "She was in a very bad financial way, but I said to her that I didn't think it was right for her, because she was only doing it because she had no choice.
"I found out six months down the line that she had been working secretly in a brothel, doing these twelve hour shifts, sometimes twenty four. The flat are taking maybe 50% of your money and she could be there and meet 24 guys in ten hours and maybe leave with £200."
She adds: "I was very fortunate. I was working for one of the top escort agencies in London at the start of my career and they had a lot of nice clients. But not every agency thinks about the girls that work for them or vets their clients."
Zoe now works for escorting community site Vivastreet Adult and says to anyone who criticises her escorting past: "My personal opinion is if it makes you happy and you want to do it, then go and do it. People can say what they want, but they don't pay my bills."
